Biofuels Delivery May Be Key Step Forward For Shipping

The global shipping industry has been a major missing element in the global quest to reduce emissions, as vessels travelling through international waters will not be counted in the carbon footprint statistics of any individual country.

However, at least parts of the sector may now be responding to the need for change, with some ships now starting to use biofuel in their operations.

Asbiofuels international reports, one of these is United European Car Carriers (UECC), which has just taken delivery of biofuels from Dutch biofuel provider GoodFuels in conjunction with NYK, owner of the m/v Emerald Leader.

The transfer, which was completed at the port of Vlissingen, involves a blend called B30, which combines 470 tonnes of VLSFO and sustainable biofuel. It means that for the first time, a vessel charted by UECC will be using sustainable fuel.

Sustainability manager for the organisation Daniel Gent said: "This momentous delivery of next-generation biofuel represents another significant step forward in our sustainability journey.”

He added: “By bunkering biofuel for the first time on a UECC time-chartered vessel, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and providing cleaner transportation options."

Bernard van Haeringen, commercial manager at GoodFuels, was similarly enthusiastic, stating: “We are confident that biofuels will play a crucial role in decarbonising the maritime sector."

The issue of shipping emissions has been raised many times, with the UK government doing so forcefully in September 2021 ahead of hosting the COP 26 summit.

Marking International Shipping Week, it called for global shipping tobecome net zero by 2050. Such an agreement would need to be agreed through the International Maritime Organization.

At present the sector accounts for around three per cent of global carbon emissions, ahigher figure than the international airline industry (2.5 per cent), which has garnered rather more attention for its role in climate change.
